Iron Mountain Literature Festival - John McGahern Award

As part of the Iron Mountain Literature Festival, Leitrim County Council and the Tyrone Guthrie Centre have developed the John McGahern Award to encourage the development of emerging Irish writers and to pay tribute to the exceptional contribution of John McGahern to literature, and to Leitrim.

The recipient of the Award will receive a two-week fully resourced residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre and a stipend of €500. 

This is an open call to emerging writers of fiction resident in the Republic of Ireland. Applicants must have had some fiction or short stories published in a recognised journal or anthology selected by an established publisher or editor.

Deadline: 5pm, 31 July, 2017.

The recipient of the award will be publicly announced on Saturday 7th October 2017 during the Iron Mountain Literature Festival at The Dock, Carrick on Shannon.

Heinrich Böll Residency on Achill Island

The Heinrich Böll cottage in Dugort, Achill has been in use as a residency for artists and writers since 1992.

The Residency at the Böll Cottage is designed to achieve the following;
– To provide a secluded and private environment for writers and Artists to do their work, a space where artists can be away from their usual environment and routine, in a place conducive to their needs, and to producing high quality work.
– To provide access for the resident island community to high quality, professional standard, cultural and artistic events. This is achieved through readings and exhibitions – visits to local schools etc, organised in a manner which does not distract the resident artist from their main creative work, while at the cottage.
– To build on the existing tradition and reputation of Achill island as an area of interest to writers and artists. The residency attracts interest from professional artists from an international base – hence focusing on the island as an area of cultural and artistic interest.

– To have an appropriate memorial to Heinrich Böll on Achill island. The residency, by providing support for artists, is a living, growing and creative way to celebrate the work and achievement of Nobel Prize winner Heinrich Böll. This project, in memory of Heinrich Böll, makes available a real tangible support structure for creative artists, and is therefore a most appropriate memorial to this important writer.

Residency in Florence

It may be worthwhile becoming a professional member of the Irish Writers Centre if you'd like to apply for a residency in Florence.

The Irish Writers Centre is continuing to develop its links with Italy and we are delighted to announce a one-week residency with St Mark's in Florence this autumn from 29 September – 6 October 2017. 

While the successful applicant must cover their own transport and living expenses, they will have the chance to reside in the beautiful hospitality apartment adjoining St Mark's English Church in the heart of Florence. During their stay they will be expected take part in a public reading, as well as meeting with the local writing community.

1. A cover letter including your personal details concisely outlining the project you would like to focus on during the residency
2. An updated Curriculum Vitae (max. two A4 pages) including publications with ISBNs.

4. Any relevant information on your proposed project such as written excerpts, photos, research information, etc.

Call for dlr Writer in Residence

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council invites applications for a writer in residence for the period June 2017 to May 2018.  This writer in residence is managed by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Arts Office and is grant-aided by the Arts Council.


The residency is open to writers working in script-writing in any form (e.g. writing for stage, TV or film).  The theme this year is Ireland: The Future. The writer’s work may draw inspiration from this theme in a variety of ways.  The residency is envisaged as a part-time residency which will allow time for the writer’s own work in addition to engagement and interaction with both the general public and, more specifically, with those with an interest in writing themselves.


The writer in residence will focus on working in the dlr LexIcon in Dún Laoghaire and the writer in residence will have access to a room on the top floor of the new Central Library and Cultural Centre.
Applicants must live in, work in, be originally from or have studied a relevant discipline in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown.

Artist Residencies in Paris!

Our annual residency programme offers great opportunities for artists of all disciplines to tap into the resources of Paris and the CCI, as well as being an important means of showcasing Ireland's dynamic contemporary culture on an international stage.

Residencies of up to 3 months running from September of the same year to June of the following year, open to practitioners in all art forms with a record of professional achievement. Travel from Ireland, accommodation and a monthly stipend of €700 per month included. Applicants will be notified of the outcome in March.

The artist in residence will be asked to participate in the cultural programme of the Centre Culturel Irlandais.

Applicants must be Irish citizens or normally resident in Ireland, with professional involvement in creative practice. (Does that count out quite a lot of serious poets?)

The Moth Retreat

There are new retreats popping up all over for writers and artists, each with their own ethos. This one is from the lovely people who run the Moth Magazine.


The barn features a large studio/living area and kitchen/breakfast room downstairs, and a bedroom and bathroom upstairs.

Fresh eggs are provided every morning, and fresh vegetables (when in season), in warm, inviting accommodation that is in keeping with The Moth aesthetic, and where a keen eye has been kept on William Morris’s golden rule: ‘Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.’

There is an easel in the studio downstairs, and a writing desk upstairs, and a bicycle is provided (though the publishers of The Moth, Rebecca O’Connor and Will Govan, will be on hand should you need to purchase groceries or a lift to Cavan Town).

The Moth retreat is situated along a beautiful country lane in Ireland (3 kilometres from the local village of Milltown and 19 kilometres from Cavan Town) and surrounded by some of the county’s famed 365 lakes. Just a few kilometres away is Drumlane Abbey, founded by Saint Colmcille in the sixth century. The county also hosts the source of the River Shannon and has its own Burren, with numerous geological sites recognised by UNESCO.   

How to apply:
Accommodation is €300 a week and is self-catered. A minimum stay of 1 week is required, and a maximum stay of 2 weeks. The accommodation is specifically for artists and writers.

Space to Write

There are residencies and retreats for writing and other artistic spaces popping up all over the place. Each has its own ethos and feel. Here's one in a restored Victorian villa historically named ‘Glenhassan Hall’ facing Northern Ireland’s Downhill beach, Coleraine, Co Derry. It has a draw for a free stay at the end of January.

Space to Write 2017 is now taking bookings.

When?
From Friday the 27th of Jan - Feb 5th.  It's 2 weekends plus the week in between.  

These dates are set aside for writers to have 'Space to Write' at a very low rate ( less than half normal price per room) The minimum booking is 3 nights, price is £22 per single room per night. We provide a beautiful space, a real fire, and endless tea and coffee. You bring yourself and the project you are are working on and food/drink for self-catering. There is no requirement to meet with the other participants or share what you are working on, however this tends to happen naturally. There is a gentle and supportive atmosphere and you will meet wonderful encouraging people.

The Poetry Divas are going to Anam Cara Writer's and Artist's Retreat

Next Saturday, 20 August 2016 The Poetry Divas are going to Anam Cara Writing Retreat in Beara, Co Cork. And we have a special guest diva, Eileen Sheehan. Should be great. Please come along if you are anywhere near.

The Poetry Divas is a collective of women poets. We read our own poems at events and festivals all over Ireland, blurring the wobbly boundary between page and stage. We tailor each show to the occasion and audience and aim to give a deliciously infectious show that’s bound to touch a nerve. We are all well-published and anthologised poets in our own right: Kate Dempsey's debut collection, The Space Between, was published by Doire Press in 2016; Maeve O’Sullivan has published three collections: Initial Response (haiku, 2011), Vocal Chords (poetry, 2014) and A Train Hurtles West (haiku, 2015); and Special guest diva Eileen Sheehan's collections are Song of the Midnight Fox and Down the Sunlit Hall. Given the name and ethos of the venue, our theme for this performance will be friendship." After their presentation, the mike will be open for more poetry and song.

University of Limerick Writer’s Fellowship

Applications are invited from Irish writers of established reputation across all genres (eg fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, drama, film) for the Arts Council/ University of Limerick Writer’s Fellowship which is co-funded by the University of Limerick and the Arts Council.

The Fellowship will be tenable either for the period January – June 2017, or, if it suits the Fellow, for the full calendar year January-December 2017, with one introductory session to be undertaken in autumn, 2016. The Creative Writing programme at UL is led by Professor Joseph O’Connor and is taught by a number of acclaimed writers, including novelists Donal Ryan, Giles Foden and Sarah Moore Fitzgerald.

The Fellow will be a part of UL’s Creative Writing community and will engage with students, staff and faculty in a number of ways. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to teach at the UL Creative Writing Summer School in New York and to develop her/his own work in a supportive environment. The stipend for the Fellowship is €20,000.

Interested candidates are invited to submit a covering letter outlining areas of interest, teaching experience (if any), ideas for engagement with UL’s Creative Writing programme, and a full CV to include the name and contact details of 3 referees to our Programme Coordinator for Creative Writing, Claire Ryan, claire.ryan@ul.ie

Paid Poetry Residency

With all the shenanigans and bad news with poetry funding in the UK, it's good to see some good news and new opportunities.

The Poetry School and Poetry in Aldeburgh have a joint offer to make: an opportunity for a festival-focused poet in residence.

While the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival organised by The Poetry Trust has a breather and an organisational regroup during 2016, Poetry in Aldeburgh is making sure that there are events to take place during the usual festival weekend of 4-6 November.

These Are Our Residency Goals …

• To illuminate and explore the programme and experience of the Poetry in Aldeburgh festival for the benefit of Festival goers and those who follow its events digitally
• To reflect on the experience of being a poet in residence in order that other members of the Poetry School community might be inspired to seek similar opportunities in the future
• To provide a poet with time and space to create new poems

Who We Are Looking For

• A poet writing at an advanced level (which the Poetry School defines as a person ‘confident about what you want to say and how you want to say it … on your way to a pamphlet or a first collection’). You do not need to have already published a pamphlet or collection.
• A poet capable of writing pithy, engaging prose reviews and articles with short lead times.
• Experience of engaging readerships and audiences online.
• A confident user of online technology and familiar with (or unfazed by) the back end of WordPress sites.

• The fee for the residency is £1,000 inclusive of VAT if applicable, travel expenses and food.

Cill Rialaig residency

Cill Rialaig arts centre in Co Kerry is more aimed at visual artists but some writers do visit. There is a call currently from the Irish Writers Centre but I do believe you can apply separately, for instance if the dates don't suit. It's very beautiful, by all accounts, but pretty remote.

The Irish Writers residencies are now open for applications to seven writers for a ten-day period from 21–31 October. The seven residencies are offered all-inclusively free of charge (the IWC will cover the utility charge for each of the seven houses). Expenses incurred by the selected writers will be food and travel. In addition, the writers are requested to put aside approximately 2 hours at the start and the end of the residency to come together in the Seannachai's house to meet and discuss a programming or development idea that the IWC might undertake in the future. Details to be finalised in due course.

Access, at agreed times, to a room on the top floor of dlr LexIcon. It is a requirement of the residency that the writer spend at least 10 hours a week working in dlr LexIcon.

The residency is open to writers working in any genre (e.g. fiction, non-fiction, poetry, script-writing, etc). 
The residency this year will focus on the theme of Creativity and will have a particular emphasis on writing for 8-18 year olds.

The writer’s work may draw inspiration from this theme in a variety of ways. The residency is envisaged as a part-time residency which will allow time for the writer’s own work in addition to engagement and interaction with both the general public and, more specifically, with children and/or young people and potentially a range of schools in the county.

Artist Engagement Programme with Kerry County Council - Writer in Residence

One with a close deadline: 4.00pm on March 10^th 2016

Kerry County Council, in partnership with the Arts Council of Ireland, wishes to contract a Writer as part of its Artist Engagement Programme for 2016.

The Residency will be a part-time position (20 hour week - 7 hours of which is for the Writer’s own work development) which will allow time both for the writer’s own work in addition to engagement and interaction with the general public and more specifically with people interested in writing themselves.

It is intended that the writer will have a room available to them at Kerry County Museum in Tralee for their own writing hours as well as office administrative support at the Arts Office, Kerry County Council, Tralee.

The Residency is open to writers in all genres, and should have a countywide impact. As part of this Residency, the successful applicant will be asked to stimulate greater awareness of the art of creative writing as well as encouraging more opportunities for people to engage with the work of writers. The writer’s ability to mentor up-coming writers, young people and those interested in developing their writing skills must be clearly demonstrated in the application material.

The residency this year will focus on the theme of County Kerry from 1916 to 2016. This theme can be explored through a wide range of possible approaches. 

  

In the past, writers in residence have engaged with schools and writers groups and have organised workshops and engaged in one-to-one discussions with writers in the area. The Arts Office is open to new approaches and responses around the public engagement aspect for this residency.

Application Requirements 

Applicants are asked to submit the following material:

• A typed curriculum vitae (maximum 3 pages)
• Examples of previous work
• Publications, programmes or published articles, such as reviews
• A typed proposal outlining artistic ideas and approaches (two typed pages); this should include an outline of the benefits of the residency to her/his stage of development as a writer, and ideas in relation to public engagement during the residency with detailed suggestions for workshops or public/community engagement
• Two letters of reference 

 Criteria for Selection

• Irish citizen / permanent resident of Ireland
• Active in the writing profession
• Artistic merit and distinctiveness of proposal
• Balance of same to reflect the 50/50 expected outcomes
• Suitability of the proposal
• Quality of previous work
• Experience in teaching creative writing preferred
• Experience developing and successfully delivering programs, workshops, and readings

Shortlisted applicants will be called for interview in April 2016.

Residency for writers in the Irish Language

The Irish Writers Centre and Anam Cara Writer's & Artist's Retreat are delighted to partner together to offer two one-week residencies at the Anam Cara retreat to Irish language writers, including fully subsidised accommodation and meals. 

This is an open call to writers resident in the Republic of Ireland with a proven track record and at least one book of prose or poetry in the Irish language which has been published by a recognised publisher.
