Google Poetics
Google Poetics is born when Google autocomplete suggestions are viewed as poems.
Google’s algorithm offers searches after just a few keystrokes when typing in the search box, in an attempt to predict what the user wants to type. The combination of these suggestions can be funny, absurd, dadaistic - and sometimes even deeply moving.
There is, however, more to these poems than just the occasional chuckle. The Google autocomplete suggestions are based on previous searches by actual people all around the world. In the cold blue glow of their computer screens, they ask “why am I alone” and “why do fat girls have high standards”. They wonder how to roll a joint and whether it is too early to say “I love you”. They seek information on ninjas, cannibals, and Rihanna, and sometimes they just ask “am I better off dead?”

Aim for poetic results. Avoid common, trite phrases such as ones including the word “lyrics”.
Read yours out loud first.
Maybe a phrase or phrase couplet will spark a longer poem.

UK Poetry Magazines - The Wolf
The Wolf.
It was founded in April 2002 with a clear emphasis on publishing emerging new poets alongside more established writers. It is now published three times a year and edited by James Byrne .

Boyle Arts Festival Poetry Competition 2013
Prizes: €500 first prize plus 4 x €50 highly commended.
Deadline: 15 June.
Shortlisted poems will be notified ahead of the awards which will be held on Sunday 28 July 2013 in King House, Boyle at 7pm.

Judge
Poems will be judged by Geraldine Mills who has published two collections of short stories and four collections of poetry.
Workshop
Geraldine will also be hosting a poetry workshop, "Wordstitching" on Sunday 28th July between 11.30 and 1pm, €20.
This workshop is aimed at writers who wish to explore the elements that are necessary to produce a good poem. Using a series of short writing exercises, participants will engage with weaving words together to create a poem that is a primary experience for writer and reader.

Five Words International Poetry Competition 2013-14
Each week on Tuesday at midday (GMT), from the 16th of April 2013, five words are posted at this link. Entrants have one week to compose and submit one (or more) poem(s): poems that must include all five words.
At noon next Tuesday, these words will no longer be eligible, and replaced with five new words. The competition will run for a total of forty weeks, until the last week of January 2014. One winner will win 500 euro and if available, then invited to read at Ó Bhéal’s seventh anniversary event, on Monday 14th of April, 2014 (an additional travel fee of 100 euro plus B&B accommodation will be provided for this)..

New Poetry Divas Pamphlet
The fabulous Poetry Divas are working on a brand new poetry pamphlet. It will follow in the footsteps of

Eleventh John Hewitt Spring Festival
This
year's Spring Festival takes place on Friday 10th & Saturday 11th
May 2013 at Carnlough’s Londonderry Arms Hotel on the Antrim coast.
This, the eleventh John Hewitt Spring Festival, offers an exciting day of literature and the arts with Ronan Bennett, Louise Doughty, Sarfraz Manzoor, Kim Lenaghan, Cherry Smyth, Kenneth Irvine, Michael McKimm, Elaine Gaston, Heather Newcombe, Cahal Dallat and Anne-Marie Fyfe.
The theme for this year's Spring Festival and Summer School is "Living Among Strangers".

Éigse Michael Hartnett
We kick off at 2.45 at Ed Lynch's for Ned's annual rendition of "The Ballad of Salad Sunday".
We move to The Red Door at 3pm for the official launch of "I Live in Michael Hartnett", an anthology of poems dedicated to Hartnett: edited by James Lawlor and published by Revival Press in conjunction with Limerick Co Co . The anthology will be launched by Paula Meehan.
Then we move to Cleary's Bar at 4pm where contributing poets are invited to read from the anthology and we will also have readings from Hartnett's work.

Heinrich Böll Memorial Weekend
The weekend will be formally opened by Professor Enda Mc Donagh at the Cyril Gray Memorial Hall, Dugort, at 7.30pm on Friday May 3rd .
In 2013 the weekend event will focus on the work of American painter Robert Henri, who worked on Achill 100 years ago this year. We will also host a series of readings and a celebrate the contribution to literature of Achill born poet John F Deane which will mark his 70th birthday.
From 5.00pm Friday there will be a documentary exhibition of reproductions of Robert Henri’s Achill portraits at Áras Forbairt Acla, Crumpaun Keel.
American curator Valerie Ann Leeds, will give an illustrated lecture focusing on the work of Robert Henri in Achill entitled; Robert Henri. From New York to Corrymore.
On Saturday morning Guided Walk with Eoin Halpin; Corrymore House / Lake. Meet at MCC Waterworks.
On Saturday afternoon the Heinrich Böll cottage will be opened to members of the public.
There will be a Poetry Reading with Padraig J. Daly / Fiona Sampson / James Harpur /Harry Clifton. Cyril Gray Hall. Dugort - followed by a creative writing seminar hosted by poets Eva Bourke and Gerard Smyth at the Cyril Gray Hall.
Lecture by visual artist René Böll focusing on research work on Cillíní on Achill Island.
Talks on Robert Henri by Tom Mac Namara Identifying the sitters; Robert Henri’s portraits of children from Dooagh. and by visual artist Deirdre Walsh ”The Art Spirit” Robert Henri focusing on the influence of Robert Henri as teacher, at Áras Forbairt Acla, Crumpaun Keel.

On Saturday evening Maurice Harmon will deliver a new lecture 'Lonesome, between times'. The Poetry of John F. Deane, - this will be followed by a reading by John F. Deane. Chaired by Jack Harte. St. Thomas’s Church Dugort.
On Sunday morning a guided walk on Inishbiggle Island, and a lecture by Revd Canon Professor Patrick Comerford history of Church of Ireland Inishbiggle.
This will be followed by poetry readings from Paddy Bushe / Eva Bourke / Jan Wagner/, with introduction by Mechtild Manus Director Goethe-Institut Irland. Island Church Inishbiggle. Later Sunday afternoon talk by Patrick Comerford ‘The poet as theologian, the theologian as poet’ ... a theologian’s engagement with John F. Deane,

Cork-Shanghai Residency
Applications are invited from Cork-born
or resident writers for the position of writer in residence in Shanghai. The
position is offered as part of an exchange between The Munster Literature Centre
and the Shanghai Writers' Association. The residency will cover the period
September 1st to October 31st.
The successful candidate would partake
in the Shanghai Writing Programme, which involves up to eight writers drawn from
across the world, interacting with their Chinese counterparts and one another.
The Munster Literature Centre would arrange events with the Shanghai expatriate
Anglophone community and Cork City Council would also arrange appearances at a
number of nearby cities for the successful applicant. It is envisaged that the
successful applicant would also have plenty of opportunity to concentrate on
their own writing.
A Chinese writer will take up residency
in Cork at the same time the Cork writer is in Shanghai. The initiative is part
of Cork City's twinning relationship with Shanghai, but applications will be
accepted also from Cork County writers.
The Shanghai Writers' Association will
provide travel, accommodation and a daily stipend of RMB100 (approx. €12). The
Munster Literature Centre will provide a top-up sum of €1000.
Applicants must have at least one book
professionally published (either fiction or poetry) and be either born or
resident in Cork City/County. Since the successful candidate will be a guest of
the Chinese government she/he must agree to respect local customs and
sensitivities. Authors who have previously participated in the Shanghai Writers'
Programme are not eligible to apply again.

Poetry for Beginners: From Dabbling to Diving
in Belfield

Patrick Kavanagh once wrote: ‘I dabbled in verse and it became my life.’ Have you ever dabbled and wanted to take it farther? Or read a poem and thought ‘That’s amazing! How is it done or could I do it?’ Ever wondered why rhyme sometimes works (and often doesn’t), or what makes poetry different from prose? Or why line-breaks are important? Though designed for beginners, this course is also suitable for those who have written some poetry and are now looking for direction and feedback from others at a similar stage. Apart from the basics (learning how to break into the blank page with triggering exercises etc.), sessions will involve discussion of a number of poems by established poets whose methods and techniques will be examined. Rather than critiquing students’ earlier work, the emphasis will be on producing something new and surprising, having an adventure with language.

Brontë Society - Creative competition
Categories and Judges:
Short story - Dame Margaret Drabble
Poetry - Simon Armitage, CBE
Illustration - Victoria Brookland
In the first category, short stories, the challenge will be to create a story around one of the minor characters in one of the seven Brontë novels; for example, in 'Jane Eyre', Helen Burns’ life before she came to Lowood School.
In the poetry section we are looking for unusual personal responses to one of the Brontës' novels or poems.
For the illustration section, a new visual strand, we are looking for black-and-white illustrations of a specific scene, as described in one of the novels.
Prizes
£500 first prize, £250 second prize, and £100 third prize will be awarded in each category.
Entry fee is £10. (Steep? Especially for a single poem)
Entries are to be sent to the Brontë Parsonage, Haworth, West Yorkshire, BD22 8DR.
