Sand Submissions

SAND is an English-language literary journal published twice annually in Berlin. It features prose and poetry, translations, art and photography. Our contributors come from all over the world and include established and emerging writers, poets, artists, and translators.

We look for work that is fresh, well-written, accessible, and diverse, as we take pride in producing a beautiful journal that can be enjoyed by a wide audience.  We’re particularly interested in writing from perspectives that are generally underserved in literature, including work by women, people of color, people from the LGBTQ+ community, and people from the wider international writing community.

The Ogham Stone 2018

The Ogham Stone is a Journal of Literature and Arts produced by the MA Students of English & Creative Writing at University of Limerick.
The 2018 issue is now accepting submissions of unpublished work from both Irish and international writers and artists. They consider fiction, poetry,  creative non-fiction, and memoir, as well as visual arts/photography.

Deadline: 5pm on Thursday 31st August 2017.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

• All submissions must be emailed to oghamstoneul@gmail.com. Submissions should be attached to your email.
• All written work should be submitted as a Microsoft Word document (set in Times New Roman, 12 point). The file name should be your surname and initial(s) (e.g.  Smith J).
• Please indicate in the subject line of the email what category your submission falls into (poetry, fiction, CNF etc).
• Include a 150-word biography in the body of the email, along with a contact email address. 
• Authors and artists are asked to submit pieces of work separately for each category (i.e. one email containing a poem, another for prose).
• Individuals may submit up to 4 pieces in total but may submit across all categories.
• Prose must not exceed 2,000 words in length.
• Poetry should be submitted in the format in which you wish it to appear on the page; individual poems should not exceed 50 lines.
• We cannot accept work that has been previously published (including on personal blogs) and prefer not to receive work currently being reviewed elsewhere

Creative Ardagh - the King at the Back of the Hill

Following on from the success of the Midir and Etain anthology two years ago, Creative Ardagh are delighted to be able to put a call out again for submissions. This year in association with Longford Arts Office and Cruthú Arts Festival they are turning our attention to the King at the Back of the Hill:

‘We hope that we will once again receive art, writing (creative or factual, poetry or prose), photography and creative responses of all kinds to the story of King Maine. Submissions last time came from all over the world and from people aged 3 to 100 year old. We would love to have that diversity again.  We will also be announcing details of our new programme for schools based on the archaeology of the site in the next few weeks.The anthology will be launched on Bilberry Sunday 30th July in Ardagh Heritage and Creativity Centre. Submissions should reach us by 5th May.

Terms and Conditions:

We are accepting poetry and writing (fact or fiction) up to a maximum of 1500 words and artworks of any media. The only restriction is that it is your own original work.

You can enter from wherever you are in the world, by post or by email.

Artworks sent by post should not exceed A4 in size.

The Ogham Stone Call for Submissions

The Ogham Stone, the University of Limerick’s literature and arts journal, is currently inviting submissions for the Spring 2017 edition.

The journal has fast become an influential platform for writers and artists to present their work, and it remains committed to showcasing exciting new work by emerging and established artists. Last year the journal published just under fifty pieces, including short stories, flash fiction, poetry and artwork, and featured new work by Irish writers Colum McCann, Paula Meehan, Joseph O’Connor and Mary O’Malley.

The Spring 2017 issue welcomes submissions in fiction, memoir, poetry, visual arts and photography, short graphic novels, and creative non-fiction. 

• All words submitted should be contained within a Microsoft Word document, double-spaced and typed in 12 point font (Times New Roman).
• All submissions must be emailed to oghamstoneul@gmail.com.
• Individuals may submit up to 3 pieces, in any category or cross-category.

Drabble about Huntington's Disease

What's a drabble? A flash fiction piece I think.

Your Drabble should be no more than 150 words. It should tell the story of Huntington’s disease and how it impacts on the lives of the people that live with it

Writing out of the HD shadow

Huntington’s disease (HD) is a neurological condition that is still hidden in the shadows and our aim is to use the power of storytelling to raise awareness.

The competition will be judged by Alan and Michael and they will present prizes to three talented writers at the winners event in September 2016.

Boyne Berries Call for Submissions

The submission period for Boyne Berries 20 is now open. Boyne Berries 20 will feature poetry and fiction or prose on an open theme.

Send up to 3 poems per poetry submission. Poems should be no more than 40 lines long.

Fiction and prose submissions should be no more than 1500 words.

Boyne Berries magazine was established by the Boyne Writers Group and is published twice a year accepting submissions of prose and poetry from all over the world.

Banshee Submissions

Banshee is a new magazine of contemporary writing which publishes twice a year. They are looking for submissions of fiction, short story length or flash or articles to their 3rd issue.

Deadline: 30th April 2016

• All submissions should be previously unpublished.
• Stories and essays should be 1500-5000 words. Flash fiction should be less than 1000 words, poems no more than 40 lines.
• We are happy to read up to two stories, up to two essays, up to four flashes and up to six poems. However, we ask that each writer submit in only one of the above categories.
• Submissions should be in one .doc or .docx format attachment, double spaced, and in a non-quirky font.
• Please include a short bio (max 50 words) in the body of your email.

The Penny Dreadful at Salon Nights

DLR Lexicon are hosting regular Salon Nights showcasing various Irish magazines and presses. This time it's the turn of Penny Dreadful.

This month’s Salon Night hosted by dlr writer in residence Selina Guinness features The Penny Dreadful, a biannual, literary magazine, based in Cork, publishing poetry, fiction and reviews. It recently launched its own imprint, The Dreadful Press, and hosts The Penny Dreadful Novella Prize each summer. Editors John Keating and Mark O’Connell will be joined on the night by writers Dean Browne and Jessica Traynor.

I Am Dublin Flash Fiction Competition

Deadline: Monday 15 February 2016, 5pm

Entry fee: €5

This flash fiction competition encourages you to channel your inner Anna Livia Plurabelle and to seek inspiration in the charm of our fair city – cracks and all. Pieces should be 400 words in length (in English or Irish) and should be submitted by 15 February 2016. Four winners will be invited to take part in a showcase event on Tuesday 15 March alongside four well-known names on the Dublin literary scene.

Galway Rape Crisis Centre Poetry Competition

 

This competition closes this Thursday 7th January but it's a very good cause so please consider entering and donating.

There will be three categories poetry, flash fiction and short stories.

Winners in each category will receive €100 cash prize, publication in SIN magazine and a chance to read at the prize- giving event at NUIG in February.

Entry fees are €7 each and €5 concession for students.

Multiple entries are allowed. Maximum lines for any one poem is 50. Maximum for flash entries 500 words and short stories 1800.

Big in Berlin?

There are lots of English language magazines who take writing so don't restrict yourself to Ireland, the UK or even the USA.

SAND - Berlin's English Literary Journal

We are currently accepting submissions for our upcoming issue. For our lucky 13th issue, we are particularly looking for great writing from perspectives that are generally underserved in literature. For example, female, p.o.c., queer, or otherwise magnificent authors!

We also want to make a special call for literary nonfiction: personal essays, travel essays, creative reportage, etc. We're not looking for hard criticism or anything too academic; we want nonfiction with a strong authorial voice that demonstrates the author's gift for observation. 

As always, we also invite artists, photographers and illustrators to show us their work.

The deadline to submit for issue 13 is January 15th, 2016.

ROPES 2016 submissions

Ropes, the Galway based annual anthology edited and published by the students in the MA Literature and Publishing at NUI Galway, is looking for submissions for their 2016 issue. 

This years theme is independence in all its guises and they seek your most innovative, daring, experimental and gutsy writing.

Contributions are welcome in fiction, nonfiction, poetry and artwork. This includes flash fiction, genre fiction, graphic stories, memoirs, essays, visual art, photography, page decorations and illustrations.

All proceeds of ROPES 2016 will benefit the Galway Simon Community, a charity
that provides housing, support and health care services for people who have
become homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless in the West of Ireland.

Boyne Berries submissions for 1916 theme

The submission period for Boyne Berries 19, which will be a special issue commemorating the centenary of the 1916 Rising is open. The magazine will  be published in late March of 2016.

Submissions for anthology of LGBT writing

The Limerick Writers’ Centre is seeking submissions for a new anthology of LGBT writing. The anthology, entitled “It’s a Queer City All the Same – An Anthology of LGBT Writing in Limerick”, will be published late October 2015.

We welcome all writers to submit as long as you or your character identify as LGBT. This anthology will feature poetry, prose, essays and more, and will hope to explore the queer experience of Limerick life. We are looking for work that is sensitive, brave, irreverent, and humorous; above all we want writing that is original, fresh, innovative and varied – work that embodies the strength of the region’s queer talent, covering themes and issues relevant to the LGBT community, but relatable to all.

Tin House Theme Issues

We accept submissions until May 31, and, as always, our summer and winter issues are not themed. We consider each submission for all upcoming issues regardless of theme. If you wish to be considered for a particular theme, please make a note in your cover letter. We have provided suggested deadlines for each theme issue, but please be aware that these fill up fast, so get your theme-issue submissions in as soon as possible.

The Runt - Open for Submissions

i haven't seen a copy of the Runt but check them out on Youtube. Refreshing. And you can't go wrong with this kind of of artwork I think.

Our 8th issue will focus on the dual themes of historical fiction & alternate history. We welcome submissions on either theme in any artistic or literary medium your creative brains can concoct.

Historical fiction constitutes any piece of work (be it poem, story, essay or whatever) focused on a historical setting. A heartbreaking romance written from the point of view of the horse Caligula made a senator? A rumination on the personal life of Genghis Kahn? An account of the life of some poor Joe Schmo 6 caught up in the crossfire of the 1916 Rising? It's entirely up to you!

Alternate history is a genre which is based on those tantalising 'what ifs.' A story set in a 21st century America still under British control? A poem about JFK's disgrace after he survived assassination but was exposed as an adulterer? A neat bit of photoshop showing Attila the Hun firing off a text on his Android? These are but a few options available to you!

Burning Bush Submissions call

The well thought of, online mag, Burning bush 2 is looking for submissions of poetry and flash fiction.

Send no more than 4 poems, in the body of an email with “Poetry – Your Name” as the subject heading. A short biographical note should also be included. Please allow up to 8 weeks for a decision. There are no restrictions on style, themes etc. Do not send attachments unless requested.

We prefer new, unpublished work but if something has been published before, let us know where and when. The decision of the editors is final and no discussions will be entered into.

Ideas for reviews, criticism or other articles should be pitched prior to sending the full text to the editors. Miscellaneous articles will appear from time to time on The Burning Bush 2blog as well as in each issue.

We now also consider submissions of flash fiction: please send submissions of short fiction, limit 500 words, in the body of an email to the address below.
