Plans

Maybe if I write them down, I'm more likely to adhere to some of them.

- Send out more poems, particularly to UK magazines. Plus I haven't sent to Poetry Ireland in a while and I'm sure they're missing me. Once I'm rejected from the Stingy Fly (reading from now to 31st March but they always reject me, bah) I'll start sending out. Any suggestions? Preferably paying.

- Apply for bursaries from whoever is out there for writing, arts council in April, County Council, anywhere else? Again, money is so tight. I have to pay for my writing retreat with something. For writers, it's time that costs. And that's harder to itemise for your average grant.

More later.

Hi, Not a magazine, but a competition. If successful could kill two birds with the one stone...http://www.strokestownpoetry.org/compinfo.htm

I have been rejected by Poetry Ireland for ten years ( and accepted by other Irish magazines - not by the StinGY Fly).
Poetry Ireland has never sent me anything more for ten years than formal rejections despite my repeated requests...) At the end I sent them a submission of five blank papers and they sent me a formal rejection to this too.

Hi John, Thanks. I have strokestown already profiled on the blog somewhere I think. But it's a competition with a paying fee which in theory is not on the agenda this year. I may change my mind though before 22nd Jan.
Tommaso. There's a new editor for Poetry Ireland now. Try her. Never say never. GOod luck

Hear hear re: 'For writers, it's time that costs.'
I tried to explain this to Galway Co Co last year. They offered me a grant of €1000. Thing was, I had to spend the grant before I received it. I explained the ridiculousness of this i.e. if I had the money, I wouldn't ask them for it. I explained it was TIME I was trying to buy. THey wanted a product at the end of the grant period also e.g. a book.
I couldn't be arsed ever applying to them again. Too much palaver and nonsense for too little gain.

I totally agree. It's easier, I think sometimes, for visual artists because they can point at a painting and the cost of the paints.

Think I'm gonna give the Stinging Fly a lash myself this year, but I'm already prepared for the rejection!

I've decided that I'm only entering competitions witha €5 deadline. This will radically increase the number of competitions that I'll be unsuccessful in.
Have you seen some of the American competitions advertised on Poetry Ireland?? $25 and upwards per entry??
