The Man Booker Prize shortlist was announced, selected from the longer, most unusual longlist in years.

The six titles shortlisted are:

Darkmans by Nicola Barker (Fourth Estate)
The Gathering by Anne Enright (Jonathan Cape)
The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid (Hamish Hamilton)
Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones (John Murray)
On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan (Jonathan Cape)
Animal’s People by Indra Sinha (Simon & Schuster)

I have to say I think Nicola Barker has a good chance, or maybe the Reluctant Fundamentalist. If Mr McEwan wins I think I'll give up reading for a year in protest ;) Thanks for the link in the earlier post by the way :)

Interesting take on the McEwan question in the Independent on Sunday

The booker longlist does have an effect on sales but the numbers are much lower than I would have expected. Up to mid August anyway. Chesil Beach has sold 100,000; the next best, The Welsh Girl, has accounted for 3,400. Eight of the 13 titles had sold under 1, 000.

I've only read the McEwan book I'm ashamed to say but I really liked it (after hating Saturday).

I liked Saturday a lot when I was reading it but felt a bit more negative after I had finished reading it. I haven't tried Chesil Beach after reading an extract in the Guardian I didn't enjoy.
